While preparing for Short term schengen visa application while visiting Germany, this is most usual conundrum one always face. Below is the what official checklist ask to produce without further explaination.

To tackle this confusion, we searched for most authentic source of information to get definite answer. And that is European Union Law Book! Nothing can be more authentic than that.

Here the that source for you to read yourself : Link to European Law on means of subsistance.

Below is the short summary :

Each schengen country defines the means of subsistance on its own based on country specific cost of leaving. Here we are strictly speaking what is applicable while applying the visa through German Consulate.

As per the law, border control makes the decision on individual cases based multiple criterion like if person is invited by relatives or company etc. But in the scenario of no other means to show means of subsistance then person should be able to prove that for duration of the stay he/she has 45€ /day available. This amount can be shown in form of

  • Cash

  • Credit Cards

  • Cheques

Also it can include one of the following.

  • a legal guarantee from a credit institution authorised to operate in the Federal Republic of Germany.

  • a letter of guarantee from the host

  • a telegraphic money order

  • a guarantee deposited by the host or a third party with the immigration authorities responsible for the stay

  • sponsorship declaration

So keeping it simple calculate the amount as :

Needed Funds = 45€ * Total number of days of stay in Germany.

And you are safe to say that you have sufficient funds :).
